Scholarship program benefits military wives Published April 4, 2011 By Staff Sgt. Jennifer Babb 919th SOW/PA DUKE FIELD, Fla -- Operation Homefront and the Saban Family Foundation are offering wives of active duty and reservists vocational training programs through the 2011 Saban Military Wife Education Scholarship. The scholarship will grant a legal military wife a chance to attend vocational training programs in the medical field if her spouse has served at least 180 combined days of active duty since Jan. 1, 2008 in any branch of the military. Upon acceptance, the applicant must be accepted by a vocational school in one of the required medical fields. Once they have completed this process, they must be able to begin using the funds within 12 months and complete their education within 48 months. All funds are paid for by Operation Homefront upon verification of enrollment and eligibility status. Senior Master Sgt. Laurie Kent, 919th Force Support Squadron chief of education and training, believes that the award is a remarkable opportunity for those who apply. "The scholarship is a great way to get vocational training other than a four-year degree. We think that it's important to support the military spouse in high-demand career fields." The Saban scholarship not only benefits the military wives, but the reservists as well. With so many of the 919th members deploying, this scholarship provides a thanks by supporting the mission taken on by the ones left behind. Sergeant Kent agrees. "Any educational benefit is great!" The application is available on the Operation Homefront website: http://www.operationhomefront.net/scholarship/
